At 10.14am on 18th October, the Penlee lifeboat were tasked to join the search for possible persons in the water 6 miles west of Land's End. A passing merchant ship, the MV Zeeland, had spotted and reported the upturned vessel to HM Coastguard at Falmouth.

The 'Ivan Ellen' launched to the search area where they joined the Sennen Cove lifeboat  and the HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter 924. A coordinated search then took place.

At about 11.30am the Coastguard helicopter 'Rescue 924' located the upturned vessel about 3 nautical miles of its first reported position. The Sennen Lifeboat proceeded to the position and confirmed that the upturned vessel had been in the water for some considerable time - there was little chance of anyone being onboard or in the water.

The Sennen Cove Lifeboat managed to get a tow attached to the upturned vessel. The tow was then passed to the Penlee lifeboat 'Ivan Ellen' and the intention was to tow it back to Newlyn.

It became apparent that the 6m fibre glass pleasure craft was going to break up at sea. The 'Ivan Ellen' crane was used to winch it onboard. It was then taken back to Newlyn and identified as a vessel called 'Iris'. HM Coastguards at Falmouth are still investigating the origins of this vessel.

Penlee crew - Coxswain Patch Harvey, Mechanic Tony Rendle, Rich Nicholls, Kenny Downing, Will Treneer, Mike Isles, Andrew Stevens, and a first 'shout' for Jason Ward.

Weather - Wind - WNW Force 5, 2m swell, moderate sea
conditions.

The ILB already at sea just near Newlyn, spotted the Speedboat and confirmed that this was the Speedboat involved in the incident and gave some safety advice to the occupants.

At 11.56am on 24th August 2016, at the request of HM Coastguard, Falmouth, the all-weather lifeboat 'Ivan Ellen' launched from Newlyn and went to the assistance of two male kayakers who were in difficulty one mile south of Loe Bar near Porthleven.

The kayaks were drifting and taking in water but one of the males was able to use his mobile phone to contact the Coastguard and summon the lifeboat. On arrival, three Porthleven fishing boats were already in attendance, the Sheila T, Saint Ruan and the Morning Star. Crew members Dan Sell and Marcel Le Bretton went onboard the Morning Star to carry out first aid checks on the two kayakers. Both were fine and were taken back to Porthleven - a brilliant result.

This could have been very different but both kayakers were wearing appropriate clothing and lifejackets. They were also able to make immediate contact with the Coastguard at Falmouth. Our thanks go to the Sheila T, the Saint Ruan, and the Morning Star, for helping out with this rescue.

Penlee Inshore Lifeboat 'Paul Alexander' launched at 18:09 on Tuesday 9th August - Falmouth Coastguard received reports of a kayaker who had capsized and was in difficulties near Cudden Point.

Penlee ILB proceeded at full speed across the bay to find the casualty had climbed onto the rocks. Once it was established they were ok the crew recovered the drifting kayak and returned it to Prussia Cove. Penzance Coastguard Rescue team were also tasked - they met the casualty as he walked along the coast path and ensured that no medical treatment was required. The team then helped recover his kayak from the lifeboat.

The kayaker had capsized, but due to the strong wind, the kayak was drifting quicker than the person could swim. Thankfully he was dressed appropriately and was wearing a lifejacket. He managed to swim ashore, but this 'shout' could have had a very different outcome had a lifejacket not been worn. Penlee Inshore returned to station at 19:15, was washed down, refuelled and ready for the next service.

The 'Het-Boot' safely moored in Mousehole Harbour

At 9.30am on 9th July 2016 the Penlee all-weather lifeboat 'Ivan Ellen', with Staff Coxswain Francie Morgan at the helm, and the Penlee Inshore lifeboat, 'Paul Alexander', launched from Newlyn and went to the assistance of a 35m Dutch vessel 'Het-Boot' with 5 persons onboard that was almost aground on rocks near the old lifeboat station at Penlee Point - the vessels anchor had parted.

The Penzance Sea Cadets who were first on scene quickly attached a tow line from their RIB to the stern of the vessel, which was just a few feet away from the rocks, and towed it to a safer position. On the lifeboat's arrival volunteer crewman, Ben Keogh, was transferred from the Inshore lifeboat on to the vessel to check on the crew and give assistance.

Both lifeboats escorted the 'Het-Boot' to Mousehole Harbour so that any damage could be assessed. Foggy conditions with poor visibility, SSW wind, slight sea.

The quick thinking and professional approach of the Penzance Sea Cadets averted a far more serious incident and we would like to congratulate them all on a job well done.

The Penlee All weather lifeboat, 'Ivan Ellen', on passage to Newlyn, assisted a 20ft yacht near Weymouth. The Ivan Ellen had been steaming for about an hour on her way home to Penlee from a refit on the Isle of White and had just passed St Albans Head when the crew saw a lone yachtsman waving at the lifeboat.

Coxswain Patch Harvey took the lifeboat alongside and discovered that the yacht, which had been heading towards Weymouth, had engine problems.

A rope was put onboard and a tow made towards Weymouth. Upon the arrival of the Weymouth Lifeboat 'Ernest and Mabel' the tow was transferred and Penlee continued on their passage back home.

At 12.49pm at the request of HM Coastguard, Falmouth, the Inshore lifeboat 'Paul Alexander' launched from Newlyn and went to the assistance of a diver with suspected decompression sickness ('the bends') who was onboard a dive vessel 2 miles ESE of the Low Lee Buoy in Mounts Bay.

The male casualty, his dive buddy, the dive master, and the dive computer, were all taken onboard the Inshore lifeboat and quickly conveyed back to Newlyn Harbour. All three were swiftly transferred to the all-weather lifeboat 'Osier' which then steamed out into Mount's Bay for a rendezvous with the 'Coastguard 924' rescue helicopter. The diver was safely air lifted from the lifeboat and conveyed to the Recompression Chamber at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.

This was the first official 'shout' for volunteer crew members, Chris Yacoubian and Tom Ritchie. It was also a very interesting afternoon out for two American tourists who were flagged down by crew member, Adrian Bick. Adrian was out walking his dogs between Newlyn & Mousehole when his pager went off and needed a swift lift to Newlyn. They were more than happy to help out and delivered Adrian safely to the station. Both were astounded by the speed of the launch and the dedication of our volunteer crews.

Due to the prevailing sea conditions the Inshore lifeboat was not able to effect a rescue. Several of our volunteer crew members were also in attendance on the shore - they were able to place a ladder across the water filled gully enabling the female to be safely returned to the beach.

Penlee Lifeboat crew helped save a fishing vessel from sinking in Newlyn Harbour on 11th Feb 2016. The alarm was raised at around 2.00pm after the ex fishing vessel, 'Ros-Le-Riough', suffered a severe leak due to recent poor weather conditions and was close to sinking.

Coxswain Patch Harvey, and mechanic, Tony Rendle, launched the Inshore Lifeboat 'Paul Alexander' and started to pump water from the vessels fishroom using the RNLI salvage pump.

Two Newlyn sardine boats, one owned by David Pascoe, Penlee's second coxswain, also assisted using their pumps. Slowly the sea water level started to drop, and at 4.30pm the 'Ros-Le-Riough' was pumped dry. A hole was located and temporarily patched up to keep the vessel afloat. Further repairs will be carried out.

The owner was extremely grateful and thanked all involved.

The kit took an additional 1.5hrs to clean making the total time involved in excess of 3.5hrs.
